Summary

THE PRINCESS IS FAKE。 THE MURDERS ARE REAL • From the New York Times bestselling author of The Flight Attendant and The Lioness, a Princess Diana impersonator and her estranged sister find themselves drawn into a dangerous game of money and murder in this twisting tale of Russian oligarchs, cryptocurrency, and family secrets on the Las Vegas strip。

Crissy Dowling has created a world that suits her perfectly。 She passes her days by the pool in a private cabana, she splurges on ice cream but never gains an ounce, and each evening she transforms into a Princess, performing her musical cabaret inspired by the life of the late Diana Spencer。 Some might find her strange or even delusional, an American speaking with a British accent, hair feathered into a style twenty years old, living and working in a casino that has become a dated trash heap。 On top of that, Crissy’s daily diet of Adderall and Valium leaves her more than a little tipsy, her Senator boyfriend has gone back to his wife, and her entire career rests on resembling a dead woman。 And yet, fans see her for the gifted chameleon she is, showering her with gifts, letters, and standing ovations night after night。 But when Crissy’s sister, Betsy, arrives in town with a new boyfriend and a teenage daughter, and when Richie Morley, the owner of the Buckingham Palace Casino, is savagely murdered, Crissy’s carefully constructed kingdom comes crashing down all around her。 A riveting tale of identity, obsession, fintech, and organized crime, The Princess of Las Vegas is an addictive, wildly original thriller from one of our most extraordinary storytellers。

Let me start this review by stating that I love Chris Bohjalian and have read all his novels。 Admittedly I've enjoyed some of his books more than others。 He is a wonderful story teller。 While each of his books have some sort of family unit at the center, he never duplicates a storyline which makes his books so interesting。 Each of his works has a "je ne sais quoi" quality that sets them apart from other books。 I felt that this one lacked that special quality that Bohjalian delivers。 The first ha Let me start this review by stating that I love Chris Bohjalian and have read all his novels。 Admittedly I've enjoyed some of his books more than others。 He is a wonderful story teller。 While each of his books have some sort of family unit at the center, he never duplicates a storyline which makes his books so interesting。 Each of his works has a "je ne sais quoi" quality that sets them apart from other books。 I felt that this one lacked that special quality that Bohjalian delivers。 The first half was slow and luckily the second half was decidedly better。 Perhaps I've given it 3 stars because I was disappointed and had hoped for something more memorable from this author。 The book is enjoyable, just not exceptional。 。。。more

Enjoyed the book, but I found myself turned off at times by the author’s vocabulary choices。 I used to teach English, but when he uses what I call “$25 words” and I have to look them up, I get a bit peeved。 I see this as a trend with this author。 Just a quirk for me that I don’t care for。

It’s been a while since a Bohjalian book has created so much suspense for me (the Red Lotus four years ago at the start of the pandemic is the very prescient last novel of his to do so)。 This novel really does have it all: British royalty, crypto, gun violence (yep, I see what you did there, Bohjalian), the mob, a murder story— and it’s all packaged in the glitz, glamour, and yes, certainly gaudiness that is Las Vegas。While this book did keep me captivated, the story seemed to wrap up a bit too It’s been a while since a Bohjalian book has created so much suspense for me (the Red Lotus four years ago at the start of the pandemic is the very prescient last novel of his to do so)。 This novel really does have it all: British royalty, crypto, gun violence (yep, I see what you did there, Bohjalian), the mob, a murder story— and it’s all packaged in the glitz, glamour, and yes, certainly gaudiness that is Las Vegas。While this book did keep me captivated, the story seemed to wrap up a bit too tightly and abruptly; there is much more depth around political gain and crypto that could maybe been unraveled。 The premise is original and fantastic, and with just a touch bit more pacing, this book would be just as sparkly as Diana’s famed tiara。 。。。more

Listened on audiobook。 I have really liked thrillers by this author before, but this one was a little too gritty for me。 Lots of language。 2。5 rounded up to 3

So predictable and bloated I was able to read 50%, then jump to the last 50 pages and still not be surprised or confused by the ending。 The setting was well researched and interesting, bumping this up from 1 star to 2。

I didn’t like Princess Diana, but I do very much enjoy the writings of Chris Bohjalian so I decided to give his latest novel THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS a try。 I chose the audiobook version because Bohjalian’s talented daughter, Grace Experience is one of the narrators。 Told from the perspectives of Vegas Diana impersonator Chrissy, her younger sister Betsy and Betsy’s newly adopted thirteen-year-old daughter Marisa readers are taken on a journey through murder, mayhem, political corruption and cr I didn’t like Princess Diana, but I do very much enjoy the writings of Chris Bohjalian so I decided to give his latest novel THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS a try。 I chose the audiobook version because Bohjalian’s talented daughter, Grace Experience is one of the narrators。 Told from the perspectives of Vegas Diana impersonator Chrissy, her younger sister Betsy and Betsy’s newly adopted thirteen-year-old daughter Marisa readers are taken on a journey through murder, mayhem, political corruption and cryptocurrency。 Marisa was my absolute favorite character。 Smart, witty and badass。 I love that she was a math geek。I liked former social worker Betsy, even though she seemed to have no ethical boundaries she wouldn’t cross, adopting one client and dating the married but divorcing father of another。 She’d never have kept her license for the latter。 I can understand the urge to adopt a special client。 As long as she referred the client to another practitioner, she’d probably be okay。 Though somewhat naive, Betsy was basically a good egg。 I didn’t like Chrissy because of her pretentiousness。 She pretended she was British, even when she wasn’t performing on stage, which I found both creepy and annoying。 She had good intentions and a good heart, so I rooted for her to survive unscathed。Bohjalian proved to me I don’t have to like or respect characters to be able to root for them。 I recommend THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS and everything Chris Bohjalian has written。 。。。more

The story was entertaining and quick but nothing earth-shattering。 Bohjalian has certainly written better books。 It almost feels as if, after the on-screen success of “The Flight Attendant,” he’s written this one with an eye towards easy adaptation for mass consumption。

I always love a Chris Bohjalian book。 It started with Midwives, and I am feeling the love for The Princess of Las Vegas。 A fantastic thrill ride of a story told between two sisters from Vermont。 Betsy, the one that stayed in Vermont, became a social worker, and finally moved out of her horrible teen years。 Crissy up and left Vermont for bigger and better things, Las Vegas。 Where everyone's dreams come true?? She has the ideal life as a Princess Diana impersonator。 Crissy has her own show, suite, and cabana at Buckingham Palace。 What more can a girl ask for? Crissy enjoys the miles between her and Betsy。 This all spins on its head when Betsy decides to move west with her newly adopted daughter, Marissa, and her boyfriend。 Moving into an apartment a few miles from Crissy。 The claustrophobia begins to set in。 What all starts out as a new life, in a new town, slowly begins to unwind。 Betsy's boyfriend seems to have turned into a different person。 Her job working at Futurium, a business that wants to change how Las Vegas gambles and put cryptocurrency everywhere。 Seems to be full of questionable employees。 A few miles away Crissy's boss is murdered。 Leaving what might happen to her show and her life dangling in the spotlight。 As more information starts to come out about Futurium and their dealings, Betsy craves the Green Mountains more and more。 As the bodies started to pile up, I was left with a knot in my stomach。 This is such a fun take on Las Vegas。 The fun, the excitement, the shows, the food, the gambling, there is an endless supply of action at your fingertips。 Gently start to dig beneath the surface of the Strip。 Who are the ones in power, who has control of the puppet strings, it is a dingy, dirty world beneath the lights。This was such an intriguing read。 I do not know much about crypto, bitcoin, or how any of the digital currency works。 It seems like a scary concept of being on top of the world one day and being wiped out the next。 Once you start dealing with that type of money you always seem to run into sketchy people and this book was full of them。 I loved the characters; they are well molded and interesting all book long。 The sisters' back story was emotional and explains so much of their relationship。 Thank you to Chris Bohjalian and Doubleday for my gifted copy。 。。。more

It makes me harder to kill。""Isn't this the city that never sleeps。 That's NY, well at least according to Frank Sinatra。""No one escapes who they are""Candle🕯️ in the darkness。" 。。。more

more deserved。Bohjalian continues to put out stand-alone fiction that is undefinable, often crosses various genres, and is always clever and surprising。 His newest release is entitled THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS and it literally focuses on a fictionalized Vegas musical cabaret show featuring an actress portraying the late and still very famous Princess Diana Spencer。The actress in question is Crissy Dowling who, even though she has been a member of SAG/EQUITY for many years, never had anything really worthwhile in her prior performance experience before this latest gig that took her from Vermont to Sin City。 In fact, she probably only got the part because of her obsession with and uncanny resemblance to Princess Diana。 There is much more to Crissy Dowling than the ability to act and be a look-alike performer。 She has a complicated past that includes a difficult relationship with her younger sister Betsy, who still lives in Vermont and is employed as a social worker。 Crissy has also survived sexual abuse by her stepfather and the successive suicides of both he and years later, her and Betsy’s mother。 The chapters of THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS are told from the alternating perspectives of both Crissy and Betsy --- along with a brief commentary prior to each chapter from teen-aged Marissa, Betsy’s adopted daughter。 Some big things happen in the lives of the Dowling sisters to kick off the action of this novel。 Crissy’s show is set inside the BP Casino that is run primarily by the Morley brothers --- Richie and Artie。 In less than a week’s time, both brothers will be dead each of alleged suicides。 The police investigate, but nothing is initially found to be suspicious。Meanwhile, Betsy has a chance for a big change。 Burnt out from her years of social work she has latched on to a new boyfriend named Frankie who was a banker。 Frankie is now involved in a new scheme with a company called Futurium that is looking to make it big in the Crypto-currency and bitcoin industry。 Frankie’s role with this new venture will send him to Las Vegas, coincidentally, and he offers to take Betsy and Marisa along with him, promising Betsy an administrative role with the new organization。Crissy takes things in stride, although having her estranged and distant sister in her playground will definitely feel weird --- especially as she is only a year her junior and also bears a resemblance to Princess Diana。 Young Marisa is eager to meet her Aunt Crissy and, being an internet research expert, has done her due diligence in the area of Lady Diana Spencer。 Crissy is a bit preoccupied with her own job security and Eddie, the partner of the late Morley brothers, is waiting to hear from their lawyers about the next steps and who might be out there looking to purchase the BP Casino。Betsy is taking to her new role and relationship in stride, but begins to get a tad leery about Frankie’s business partners。 The first time Frankie and some of his business colleagues meet Crissy they act quite inappropriately, making her feel awkward and that something else might have been up。 It is shortly revealed that Futurium is interested in purchasing the BP and claimed to be very interested in her Princess Diana show。 Crissy is warned about them not only by the head of security at BP but also the man she just began casually seeing, an ex-Russian citizen who was working with some company named GEI that had him on contract currently in Vegas。When Crissy’s new boyfriend turns up dead due to a ‘fall’ while hiking at Red Rocks just outside of Vegas, she becomes an instant suspect particularly due to the fact that she was seen at Red Rocks at the same time。 Crissy denies this and claims it was her sister, who Futurium may have been using to play her own version of Princess Diana to set up Crissy in a larger scheme Betsy was not privy to。 With not one but two Princess Diana look-alikes in the area, you know things are going to get interesting。 Betsy tries to break it off with Frankie and bail out of Futurium, but it is not that easy as this organization is backed by the Russian mafia and was not used to having people get away with disappointing them。 With Crissy under fire from the police on a couple of ‘suicide’ cases and Betsy and Marisa trapped in the clutches of Futurium, the Dowling sisters find themselves in dire danger with no help for them in sight but each other。Chris Bohjalian deftly takes all I have described, which would typically be enough to make for an engaging thriller novel and infuses it with his upper echelon writing ability to create a complex family drama that has a deadly adventure at its’ heart。 THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS satisfies on so many levels and shows once again that Bohjalian is a writer worth following no matter what he produces。Reviewed by Ray Palen for Book Reporter 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 The story revolves around the lives of 3 females。 Chrissy is a Princess Di impersonator at a cut rate Vegas casino。 Her younger sister, Betsy, lives in Vermont and has recently adopted a 13 year old girl, Marissa。 Betsy is a burned out social worker and decides to move to Vegas with shady new boyfriend。 Once they hit Vegas, things go rapidly downhill。
